FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

HOW DOES THE GAME WORK IF WE PLAY IN A DEEP END OR IF WE PLAY IN A SHALLOW END?  DOES IT WORK IN AN ABOVE-GROUND POOL?

Deep end. For the deep end, over 5 feet, we recommend the classic set of seven rules for Underwater Shootout (www.triggerfishco.com). In the deep end, the game is more strategic, where both the shooter and the goalie need to think about how they will approach each play in the game. As a shooter, do you try pushing off the side wall of the pool and go across the pool to throw, or do you go low, trying to force the goal keeper down deep, so you can push off the bottom to shoot from near the surface of the water? As a goal keeper, do you push off the back wall to speed out to tag out the shooter, or do you stay back to stop the shot?

Shallow end.  The game is different in the shallow end, because there is no tagging out, but the shooter needs to stay back at least 8 feet from the goal. The shallow end game works well with one torpedo or several torpedoes. The shooter tries to score, and the goalie tries to stop it. If  you give the shooter three torpedoes for each play, they can throw them one after another (releasing from underwater of course).  The shallow-water game is action-packed. Take turns as shooter and goalie, and keep score by counting the number of times a torpedo hits the goal (the pool wall between the goalposts).

HOW DOES THE GAME WORK WITH A WIERD KIDNEY SHAPED POOL?

If you use vertical straps as goalposts, you score when the torpedo hits the wall of the pool between the goalposts. This works great in round, above-ground pools too. We suggest spacing the goalposts 12 feet apart, but you can modify that spacing to make it harder or easier to score. Wierd shape... no problem.

HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN PLAY? IS IT A TEAM SPORT?

Think tennis, that is normally a one-on-one game. If you have a group of friends, then play a tournament of short Underwater Shootout games where the first person to score two goals wins the game, and then move on to the next pair to play. Another person acts serves as the goal judge.

The game was designed for one-on-one play, but think of the Triggerfish torpedo as a thing that you can design your own game for.

CAN I SWIM FASTER THAN THE TORPEDO?

The Triggerfish torpedo starts fast, but it slows down since there is no motor to push it through the water. One exciting thing that happens during games is when the goalie aggressively speeds off the back, goal wall toward the shooter who then manages to throw the torpedo past the goalie, who turns to catch the torpedo before it hits the goal.

IS THIS ANY FUN? MY HUSBAND WOULD PROBABLY PLAY IT BUT WOULD QUIT IF IT IS TOO EASY OR TOO HARD TO PLAY.

Think Frisbee or Spikeball. You never know until you try. The Triggerfish torpedo would not exist if we didn’t think it was a fun thing for people. You can just play catch in the pool, or play Underwater Shootout in the shallow end, using just one, two, or three torpedoes per play. You can play in the deep end too. How hard or easy it is depends on who is playing, and how you play.

WHAT ABOUT TARGET PRACTICE?

The Triggerfish pool torpedo was engineered for this. It has five small fins that make it easier to handle than conventional torpedoes with their cartoonish fins. The fins are angled to spiral the torpedo to prevent it from curving off. And lastly it has a patent-pending trigger-point tail where you place your throwing finger, and as you release it point that finger to where you want it to go.

IS IT GOING TO WRECK MY LINER?

No way!! The Triggerfish pool torpedo is made of solid rubber, like a dog-chew toy. While most other pool torpedoes are pointy, and hard as a hockey puck, the Triggerfish pool torpedo has a rounder nose and is about as soft as a pencil eraser (it just doesn’t erase).
